The Nintendo 64 was a very polarizing console for Nintendo. While it revolutionized 3D gaming, the console fell behind back in the 90's and still falls flat in many aspects today. The use of cartridges when CD-ROMS existed. The stiff analog stick that has caused injuries and frustration. The awkward shape of the controler that wasnt designed with humans in mind. The janky 3D visuals and gameplay that leave all the games on the console stale and aged. All of these issues make one of the worst consoles Nintendo has ever made. While ok at the time, theres truly no reason to look back on this era of gaming again.
Platforming games
Mario 64
While in many aspects the game falls completely flat compared to the NES and SNES Mario games, the fact that they spent so long perfecting mario's movement shows the dedication that went into the game. And it shows.
Shooter/Shoot'em up games
Starfox 64
The last time Star Fox is gonna show up. This continues the legacy of its SNES counterpart, and improves on many levels. (just play the 3ds remake instead)
Fighting games
Smash Bros. 64
Again, while theres really no reason to come back to this one, it was amazing for the time and was really the only memorable fighting game on the system.
Beat 'em up games
Fighting Force
The only Beat 'em up on the system that doesnt suck a fat one. Try it out if you're a massive nutter for the genre I suppose.
Survival games
none?
The console lacks in almost every genre. If you know one, let me know!
Rhythm/music games
none?
The console lacks in almost every genre. If you know one, let me know!
Horror games
Resident Evil 2
This hasnt aged well at all. That fact even shows in the RE2Make. But for the console this is the best you can do.
Metroidvania games
Perfect Dark
Another stretch but what am I gonna do. You have to run around and get more missions depending on your skill level which is kinda Metroidvania??
Visual novels
none?
The console lacks in almost every genre. If you know one, let me know!
Action WRPG
The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
It's either this or OOT, but I chose MM because of how it tried to shake up the now stagnating Zelda formula. It's more creatively fufilling, and adds a dark tone and the ability to jump.
Action JRPG
none?
I'm pretty sure there are like 5 N64 RPG games.
Turn-based WRPG
Paper Mario
The only one I could think of besides the next one. A solid entry but not as good as TTYD.
Turn-based JRPG
Ogre Battle 64
This is hands down one of if not the best N64 game. Mabye because it stuck to 2D, or mabye because it stuck to what it knew like Star Fox.
Puzzle games
Pokemon Puzzle Leauge
A very solid puzzle game, relaxing and fun blah blah blah. Its the same as the SNES game but with twice the pokemon.
Life simulation games
Animal Forest
I love strecthing the rules! Animal Crossing was originally an N64 game so that counts.
Sports games
none?
The console lacks in almost every genre. If you know one, let me know!
Racing games
F-Zero X
While I prefer GX or the SNES original, this is a fine step up.
Party games
Mario Party
Again, I think this is the only game in this genre. A solid time but far from the best Mario Party.
